Seasonal movements of satellite-collared caribou from the Bathurst herd

چکیده
SUMMARY We tracked the movements of between six and 19 caribou cows from the Bathurst herd from April 1996 to December 2000 using collars that transmit to a satellite. Spring migration routes partially depended where the caribou wintered which changed from northwest of Great Slave Lake to southeast of Great Slave Lake in winter 1997/98 and 2000/01. In winters of 1998/99 and1999/2000, distribution was split with caribou northwest and southeast of Great Slave Lake. The use of the satellite collars confirmed that the Bathurst herd moved into northern Saskatchewan early in the winters when the caribou were southeast of Great Slave Lake. Caribou movements were most synchronized during pre and postcalving migrations when daily rates average 20 km/day. During spring migration in 1996 and 1997, caribou traveled slightly faster as they neared the calving grounds but in 1999 and 2000, they slowed down as they were closer. We only found a weak suggestion that mosquito and warble activity may increase summer movements due to limitations within the data. The calving grounds were the smallest and most predictable part of the annual range and the area used during the rut varied most in size. The information on the distribution and migration of the caribou cows is relatively detailed baseline information geographically but limited in time to four years which is why the study is complimentary to the WKSS traditional knowledge studies 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Livelihood systems that depend on mobile resources must constantly adapt to change. For people living in permanent settlements, environmental changes that affect the distribution of a migratory species may reduce the availability of a primary food source, with the potential to destabilize the regional social-ecological system. متن کاملImplementing a novel movement-based approach to inferring parturition and neonate caribou calf survival
In ungulates, parturition is correlated with a reduction in movement rate. With advances in movement-based technologies comes an opportunity to develop new techniques to assess reproduction in wild ungulates that are less invasive and reduce biases. DeMars et al. (2013, Ecology and Evolution 3:4149-4160) proposed two promising new methods (individual- and population-based; the DeMars model) tha...
متن کاملModeling Caribou Movements: Seasonal Ranges and Migration Routes of the Central Arctic Herd
Migration is an important component of the life history of many animals, but persistence of large-scale terrestrial migrations is being challenged by environmental changes that fragment habitats and create obstacles to animal movements. In northern Alaska, the Central Arctic herd (CAH) of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) is known to migrate over large distances, but the herd's s...
متن کاملUsing Traditional Knowledge to Adapt to Ecological Change: Denésoliné Monitoring of Caribou Movements
The Chipewyan Dene or Denésôåiné have long been dealing with variability in the movements of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus). Many generations ago, Denésôåiné hunters learned that by observing caribou at key water crossings during the fall migration, they could obtain critical information about caribou health, population, and movement patterns. Systematic observation of these indicato...

Prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii was determined in 147 barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) from 5 herds in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, northern Canada, by the modified agglutination test (MAT). In the mainland herds (Bluenose, Bathurst, and Beverly), antibodies were found in 43 (37%) of 117 caribou, and MAT titers were 1:25 in 10, 1:50 in 24, and 1:50...
